Aren't we all 'Castaways'?
The Backyardigans
TikTok has been the breeding ground for blowing up the hottest tracks of the last few years: “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X, “Say So” by Doja Cat, “The Box” by Roddy Rich, the list goes on.
So what’s the app’s latest favorite song? You (definitely did not) guessed it! “Castaways” by The Backyardigans. Yes, you heard that right.
The 2004 Nickelodeon children’s series, “The Backyardigans” may be the most underrated band of all time. With their joyous harmonies, and island-vibes backing track, “Castaways” has taken TikTok by storm. Maybe the jazzy, chill sounds of the song provides a level of escapism to those longing for a faraway vacation in these pandemic times. Or maybe people on TikTok are just weird, who’s to say?
There’s no official sourcing to this, but I’ll credit the slow rise of The Backyardigans to TikTok user @swagsurfff, who started posting back in early March about how kids nowadays are likely deprived of the “SUPERSONIC BOPS” from The Backyardigans, as the show ended in 2013.
I hope Nickelodeon cuts her a check because apparently “Castaways” is back on the charts.
Stop trying to make cheugy happen
I know I explained what “cheugy” meant a few weeks ago, but I’m back to say… make it stop.
This is one of those phenomenons where, if you are blessed enough to not be online (which I’d say is actually most people) you will have no idea what the hell “cheugy” means.
But since the initial NYT article, this word has been popping up everywhere in media — as a trending topic on Twitter, in TikTok discourse, in a HEARKEN EMBED from my own employer good god!! — despite the fact that nobody uses “cheugy” on a regular basis unless they’re asking/explaining what it means. And that’s the worst part!! People still don’t agree on what it means!! Is it “basic”? Is it “cringey”? Is it “trendy white people things that for once didn’t just originate from appropriating Black culture”? I don’t know!! Nobody knows.
Please, someone, I am begging, release me from this sweet cheugy hell. And all you newspapers, knock it off. No one knows what “cheugy” means and you don’t either.
Shout out to the olds
Apparently if you’re between the ages of 36 and 41, you’re considered a “geriatric millenial.” Don’t really know what that means, but let me know if any of you need help like chewing your food or yelling at kids on your street.
Does this make me a geriatric Gen Z? Hmm I’ll have to think about that for a bit.
It’s my newsletter, so I’ll promote my own tweet if I want to
This isn’t even that good of a tweet, but I think about this photo of Saint West hopping out of an SUV like 30 times a day, so enjoy.
